CryptoPunks collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) continues to capture the attention of the digital art world, as evidenced by the recent transaction in which an NFT was purchased for more than $16 million.

According to records on CryptoPunks Website, the transaction took place on March 4, involving the sale of CryptoPunks #3100 — a rare “Alien Punk” characterized by its Headband attribute. The transaction involved 4,500 ETH which was equivalent to $16.2 million in the time of the sale.

The identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, but the transaction has already garnered significant attention as it now stands as the second-largest sale in CryptoPunks’ history. It is notable that this sale follows the CryptoPunks #5822 sale in February 2022 which sold for 8,000 ETH at the time, or $23.7 million.

Nonetheless, today’s transaction stands out as the most significant sale recorded in 2024, as other notable sales from the collection trace back to 2021 and 2022. The most recent high profile transaction occurred in September 2022. It involved the CryptoPunks NFT #2924 that sold for 3,300 Ethereum, which is approximately $4.45 Million.

This year, it appears that NFTs are experiencing a revival. Last month, the Ethereum NFT marketSales increased by nearly 97% in the second week of the month of February, compared to the week before.

Launched in 2017, CryptoPunks comprises 10,000 algorithmically generated 24×24 pixel portraits, each featuring unique attributes such as hats or smoking pipes. The collection has been a big hit, and currently holds the 9th place among NFT Collections based on sales volume.

Yuga Labs – the company that acquired CryptoPunks 2022 – introduced innovations in December to the NFTs. New WrapperDesigned to streamline access to the market. This enhancement offers improved features, eliminates royalties and simplifies transactions for CryptoPunks users.

CryptoPunks has collaborated with the FBI since October 2023. Avant ArteNFT holders are given a 48-hour time limit to convert their digital artworks into exclusive art prints. Furthermore, in 2022, the collaboration with Tiffany & Co resulted in “NFTiff,” a collection of 250 NFT passes allowing CryptoPunks holders to mint and redeem for a custom-designed pendant and NFT digital artwork.
